I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Baiju Senadhipan for graciously accepting my request to join his team at SIMS. It was a heartwarming experience to see the way he communicates with his students and junior staff, I felt like his younger brother under his mentorship. What touched me most was his generosity in providing this invaluable opportunity without expecting any payment in return. Dr. Baiju’s kindness and support have left an indelible mark on my journey in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Baiju’s dedication to teaching and patient care is truly commendable. Despite his demanding schedule, which requires him to travel between two cities, 65km apart in the state of Kerala, India, he consistently delivers high-quality care to his patients. His commitment to both education and patient welfare serves as an inspiring example to all aspiring surgeons. Dr. Baiju a renowned Gastrointestinal Oncology Surgeon with over 20 years of practice in the field, does
all types of GI surgery Laparoscopically with a commonly term “KEYHOLE” being used by all the patients that are after his service from the whole country. During my 40-days observative attachment, I had the privilege of witnessing unbelievable number of operations and endoscopic procedures that was performed by Dr. Baiju. I was told by fellows-in-training that August and September were relaxing months, yet I attended 43 Surgeries and 68 endoscopic procedures being over 90% of all procedures under his team. He made the surgeries and procedures appeared “EASY” as he narrated all the steps and the reasons behind his meticulous way of approaches and choreographic hand movements. Despite
some patients having complex pathologies (Cholelithiasis with fibrosis and adhesion covering the gallbladder area for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Distal CBD obstruction for ERCP and CBD stenting), I only have two records of him standing beside the operating table for nearly two hours. And at those times he said this was difficult.
His passion for minimal invasive surgery and cosmetically hidden post-surgical scar is vivid as I learned from him that, it was possible to resect a 11.0 X 13.6 X 17cm intraabdominal tumor through a Pfannenstiel incision. He was consulted for open surgery of the intraabdominal tumor in a 18-year-old girl who was evaluated laparoscopically by gynecology team and case rendered not manageable through laparoscopic surgery. After a repeated laparoscopic assessment, he decided to approach it via a Pfannenstiel incision and did a terminal ileum and ascending colon en-block resection with a mesenteric tumor and primary ileo-ascending anastomosis through the same incision.
Underlisted are 10 common procedures of the statistics from my observative attachment:
These cases not only enriched my understanding of minimally invasive surgery but also underscored the importance of precision, teamwork, and adaptability in the operating room. To my fellow surgeons affiliated with the Senadhipan Education Foundation (SEF), I would like to emphasize the significance of the opportunity provided by SIMS for attachment and training. This experience offers a unique chance to advance your skills in the field of surgery. My advice is to embrace every moment of learning, seek guidance from Dr. Baiju and the likes, and contribute your best efforts to patient care and surgical excellence. Together, we can continue to raise the bar in the field of minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic procedures.
In conclusion, my time at SIMS has been a transformative experience, and I am deeply grateful for the mentorship and knowledge I have gained under Dr. Baiju’s guidance. I look forward to applying these lessons in my future surgical endeavors, with a profound appreciation for the support and opportunities provided by the SEF and SIMS.

In the intervals between clinic sessions, while waiting for patients, Dr. Baiju takes the opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of his staff.
In the above image, a Medical Officer (Registrar) from Dr.Baiju’s team is seen receiving a slice of cake from her ‘chief’ at Meditrina Hospital during her birthday

The patient’s appreciation gifts to Dr.Baiju are shared and enjoyed by the entire team at the conclusion of surgeries before leaving the doctor’s room in the operating theater.
Not limited to just keyhole surgery, whenever he uses a knife, it appears enjoyable to him. With precision in seconds, he effortlessly turns the cake into equal pieces for everyone

Every evening at SIMS Clinic, where patients receive maximum interaction in a less congested setting compared to the hospital outpatient department, fellowsin-training have the opportunity to practice using Laparoscopic Virtual Endo Trainer.
